Bangladesh Flood Crisis: Over One Million People in Urgent Need

Heavy monsoon rains, flash floods, and landslides have affected more than one million people across northern, northeastern, and southeastern Bangladesh, claiming at least 51 lives. With floodwaters still rising, families have lost homes, livelihoods, and access to essential services, forcing many into emergency shelters.

Local Open Doors partners are assessing needs and preparing practical assistance, while praying for protection, relief, and improved weather.

Five major rivers remain above the danger level, while heavy rainfall and upstream water continue to raise river levels across northern and northeastern Bangladesh. With some areas forecast to receive up to 450 millimetres of rain, thousands more families face riverbank erosion, flash floods, landslides, and possible evacuation.

One local Open Doors field supervisor requests prayer: “Please pray especially for believers’ families in the north-eastern region. Due to excessive rainfall and water flowing down from upstream areas, many communities have been flooded. Families have suffered significant losses, cannot continue their daily work, and are facing shortages of basic necessities. Please pray that God will protect these families and keep them safe.”

Across Bangladesh, families have lost homes, farmland, and income. Submerged roads are preventing people from working, while daily-wage earners face shortages of food, clean water, and other essentials. Some families remain trapped in flooded homes; others have moved to emergency shelters.

Cities, including the capital, are also affected. Prolonged rain, poor drainage, and unplanned development have left roads underwater, disrupting travel to workplaces, schools, and universities.

A local Open Doors’ field staff member shares, ”As many families begin receiving relief from government and non-government organisations, we are concerned that some Muslim-background believers may be overlooked or face discrimination because of their Christian faith. Please pray that every family in need will receive assistance fairly and without prejudice, and that God will protect and provide for those who are most vulnerable.”

The most urgent needs include safe shelter, food, clean drinking water, medicine, emergency rescue assistance, and protection for families at further risk.

Our local Open Doors’ team is standing alongside the affected communities, especially believing families, through prayer during this difficult time. They are praying for improved weather conditions and asking God to intervene, protect those affected, and bring an end to the flooding. At the same time, the Open Doors local partners are working closely with ministry partners to identify believers and other families who have been severely affected so that practical assistance can be provided to those in greatest need.

Please pray for the safety and urgent needs of every affected family, for fair access to relief, and for the heavy rains and flooding to end.

Please pray:

  • Pray for all families affected by the floods and landslides, that God will protect them, provide for their daily needs, and comfort those who have lost loved ones, homes, or livelihoods.
  • Pray for improved weather conditions, asking God to stop the heavy rainfall, reduce the floodwaters, prevent further landslides and riverbank erosion, and protect vulnerable communities.
  • Pray for the local Open Doors’ team and ministry partners, that God will give them wisdom, strength, and resources as they identify affected families, provide practical assistance, and minister to both believing and non-believing communities during this crisis.

The light of the Underground Church is bright

THE DARKNESS CANNOT OVERCOME IT

Persecutors hope that by crushing Christians they will kill the Church. But the Church can’t be killed. In countries like China and Laos, it simply moves underground. And it’s growing—secretly and out of sight.

Your gift today will equip and strengthen underground believers.
